CCTV equipment for Lagos airport

Mar 3 2005

Comnavig Securex Limited selects Norbain SD to supply CCTV equipment for Lagos airport

Norbain SD Limited, Europe’s largest distributor of electronic security solutions, has won a contract from a Nigerian company, Comnavig Securex Limited, to supply security equipment for the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, Nigeria, which is being repositioned as a hub for the West African region.

MMIA constitutes about 80% of Nigeria’s aviation traffic and around 90% of potential foreign investment travels through its portals. Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Mallam Isa Yuguda, recently briefed the press about efforts by the ministry and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to make the airport more user-friendly and secure. Some facilities at the airport have been rehabilitated, while others are being upgraded to meet international standards.

The commission was the result of a survey of strategic locations at the international airport in the capital of Nigeria. The existing system had been designed to capture specific areas such as the arrival and departure halls, the security screening area and the airline counters. These are covered by a combination of high-speed PTZ and fixed dome cameras because of their large size, which were all installed by the project team at Comnavig Securex.

The project, which began in November and was scheduled for completion in late December, involved extending the surveillance to the other key areas of the airport that were not covered by the original security system. Each camera is connected to a central control room where the Triplex CDR units record images for later retrieval if required, and display images in various multi-screen display modes on the six Vista digital monitors.

"The airport authority can now monitor events in the passport control and immigration areas and in the vicinity of the airport," notes Comnavig Securex Head of Projects Biodun Jagun. "In Nigeria, the departure and arrival areas are seen as sensitive."

The installation was extended to include the baggage reclaim area, which will allow the airport to track the fate of any piece of baggage passing through their system either live or retrospectively, if a claim of baggage loss is registered. Having a comprehensive monitoring system will enable the airport to readily trace events that show relevant baggage movement and any suspicious activity in the zone.

The project was commissioned by Mallam Isa Yuguda, the Minister of Aviation, on February 25th 2005.
