Vista VR domes secure Moscow buses

Nov 3 2005

The Russian distributor for leading security solutions supplier Norbain SD has won a major contract that has entailed supplying over 90 Vista VVRD4V9C vandal-resistant domes so far for use on buses in Russia’s capital city, Moscow.

Five or six domes are being installed each week, mounted over the front passenger entrance to enable the driver to gain an excellent view of activity along the side of the bus.

Now known as Mosgortrans, the Moscow bus system employs more than 35,000 people and operates 18 bus depots, operating in parallel with the city’s renowned subway system. Moscow has a total bus fleet of some 5,700 vehicles, 1700 of which are electrically-powered trolleybuses.

Moscow’s original bus stock were British Leyland ‘Routemasters’  - the classic old-fashioned London red bus. Nowadays, Hungarian-built articulated Ikarus model 280 buses dominate the on-road fleet, alongside Russian-built LIAZ and LAZ buses. At present, the Moscow urban system operates on 442 routes, transporting some 900 million passengers each year - a third of all public transport users in the city.

OKNO-Professional Security Systems’ General Manager Boris Aristarkhov says: "The early installations were provided for training buses, so that the instructors could see the doors and road simultaneously. The system was liked, and so a decision was taken to install domes on all of the city’s buses to enable safety management." Mosgortrans electricians, aided by OKNO-Professional Security Systems’ engineers, are installing the security solutions.

Safety issues are of key importance particularly as Moscow’s busy rush-hour often causes many accidents on the city’s crowded roads. Since the terror attacks on London in July, an anti-terrorist dimension has been added to the list of benefits arising from the installations. At the moment the images are being recorded to inexpensive DVRs sited within the buses, and it is anticipated that the bus company will also move to install internal cameras to oversee security for the buses’ interiors. Small (5.6 to 7.4in) 12V DC LCD monitors in the driver compartment provide a view of any incidents.

The high resolution, vandal resistant Vista VVRD4V9C colour fixed domes are able to withstand a blow from a 12lb sledgehammer, and the range provides an ideal surveillance solution for monitoring areas prone to physical attack. Available in a variety of different housings, the range has been designed to offer a uniform look-and-feel and features while delivering a wide variety of mounting styles and positioning that enable the domes to be utilised in challenging locations such as buses.
