Notes on CCTV Lenses: Closely related to your choice of camera must be your choice of lens. Unless you have selected a camera with an inbuilt lens (such as a dome, or one of the few cameras with integral lenses), you will need to consider a separate lens for your camera. Making the correct choice for the specific CCTV environment will make the difference between a successful and mediocre installation.

The differences between the lenses relates to:
  • the iris – a device in the lens that controls the amount of light entering the camera.
  • the focal length – which governs the distance from the camera at which the image is in focus.
  • the lens size - normally the same size as the camera sensor, but using a larger lens can be advantageous as it offers greater depth of field.
